The Strawberry Line
The Strawberry Line is an 8 mile traffic-free roue through the heart of North Somerset, linking the Levels to the Mendip Hills.
Once part of the Great Western Railway, it was an important line for nearly a century, carrying passengers and and freight including dairy produce, stone and the Cheddar strawberries from which it takes its name.
Since closure in 1965 nature has reclaimed the route and it is now a Local Nature Reserve, managed for a variety of wildlife habitats from ponds and wetlands to limestone grassland and dense scrub. Volunteers started work on converting the line to a walking and cycling route in 1983, and have supported it development ever since.
Bike shops and repair are available in Cheddar and Yatton. Bike hire is available from Cheddar Cycle Store.
How to get there:
You can start the ride from Yatton Station, which is well served by trains from Bristol, Taunton, Weston-super-Mare and further afield.
Cheddar is easily accessible from the A38 via M5 J22. Yatton is easily accessible from the A370 from Bristol or M5 J21.
